Welcome to my {Heather Hurzeler} new blog home! I've been doing a lot of deep thinking and have decided it's time to really get seriously focused on my true loves.

Art and Photography with a splash of "Sew-Over-It" projects mixed in there too.

I have truly enjoyed the Sew-Over-It blog, and have been SO THANKFUL for my faithful friends and blogger friendships I've met over the past year! Thank you!! I don't want to loose or upset any of you, this has been a very hard choice for me... but I think if YOU join me it will become a long term better thing for my business and growth. :)

At the end of this month marks the 1 year anniversary of starting the blog Sew-Over-It, and the sadly the last. I LOVE sewing and creating new things from old, but have decided to really try and keep my focus on the bigger picture (my artwork & photography). If you know me at all, you'll know I have many loves in the art/craft world... and enjoy constantly learning and trying new things. But that can also be a bad thing for me, it takes the focus and time away from where it should be -

Don't worry I'll still be doing Sew-Over-It projects and perhaps tutorials ocassionally on the new blog, but mostly sewing for my children / home and self! :) I love keeping you guys inspired with DIY project ideas!

I will be keeping my store stocked with mostly Artwork, (large, small and hopefully prints too soon!) and womens accessories & wedding items.

So my new blog is: www.HeatherHurzeler.blogspot.com --- PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE FOLLOW ME THERE! I would hate to loose any of my blogger friends in this transition, I'd love to see the numbers grow! :)

The new blog & website will combine everything into one easy place for me to grow as an artist / photographer / designer! I hope you will join and support me in this adventure. :)

Pretty in Grey - Dresser Makeovers

Thrifty Dresser Makeovers

My 2 daughters share a room and were always lacking for dresser space. We did a little garage sale shopping and found this ugly brown painted dresser for $5! Loved the style & price tag... but the color reminded me of mud/poo.... ;) Time for a makeover!

We needed a matching set, something for each girl... so I pulled this little guy from my art studio that wasn't being used. And with a little spray paint magic... we had a matching set!

We picked up some new silver knobs from Target and I loved the finished product! I'm a huge fan of DIY and saving $$$! Don't let refinishing furniture scare you off, it's WORTH the time and effort.

I started by sanding down both dressers with the electric sander, removing the old paint/stain. Spray paint the set (glossy) in a deep grey and once it was dry I added a little darker glaze for the details.

The whole project cost appox $20. (including the new dresser, hardware and spray paint)

I saved a ton of $ and got exactly the look I wanted for their bedroom. Love the purple and grey combo!

And for those of you wondering how I keep a 2 & 5 year olds room so clean....? ;) Just keeping it real!

I had to shovel barbies, books and clothes off the tops of the dressers just to get some pics. haha.

One of my girls FAVORITE toys is their doll house handmade by their daddy and decorated by me.

I've logged many hours of playtime with them, I've got to admit... we had fun creating this giant 3 story house, my childhood dreams come true. ;)

Spring Break

I'm back after a much needed family vacation over spring break to Seattle and Bend to visit family and friends. We had an awesome time and I came back feeling refreshed and loaded with inspiration!

The downtown market is loaded with color, fresh flowers, produce, jewelry, art, fish... etc! It is a sensory overload for the eyes, nose and probably wallet. ;) I purchased some artwork from a local vendor, yummy chocolate cherries, and lusted after the many gorgeous flowers.

Seattle had sunshine all 3 days we were there, crazy beautiful and a very unexpected treat! I was hoping for a little rain though, but we got some of that and snow on our 3,700 mile round trip drive! ;) Arizona to Seattle, and back again... plus lots of site seeing, wow!

Of course no market place shopping is complete with out a little Antique shopping!

So many fun treasures, I wish I had more $$$ and space to bring things home. :)

Finding beauty in your surroundings...

In the past the word "Desert" and "Beautiful" would not be two words I would place together in the same sentence.

Growing up in Arizona, I've gotten my fill of dry desert waste lands... endured the tumbleweeds, allergies and extra dusting in housework that comes from living in the desert. (haha... not that I actually do a ton of dusting, just keeping it real). Unless the wildflowers are in bloom, I found the desert pretty much a UN-inspiring place that is filled with rattlesnakes and scorpions... two of my least favorite things in the world. I'm a BIG coward when it comes to scorpions, just gives me the shivers just typing that word. blaa! anyways, sidetrack! ;)

However, something has finally sparked inside me to really find the beauty in my surroundings. Right now we are living here and I should make the best of it and showcase the beauty of something I once detested. I think that is pretty much my "Sew-Over-It" way of thinking, take something old and boring to you and make it new, beautiful & exciting! :)

I've been enjoying learning more and enjoying the art of photography... and strangely enough I have found one of my favorite locations to shoot so far has been the desert. Here are a few of my favorite desert photos thus far.

There is nothing more beautiful than an Arizona sunset, well.. except for maybe two people madly in love. ;)

This is how girls play on windy days, when most people run inside and a dust storm is coming... my adventurous daughter and I play outside! ;)

What is something you have a hard time finding "beautiful"? Take a closer look and you might just change your mind.

All this to say about the "desert", and I am off next week for a family vacation to Seattle! Haha.... every desert flower has to soak up the rain for a little bit right? ;)

Gold and brassy to...

Garage Sales & Spray paint make me happy! ;)

I turned this $3 gold/brassy grandma's mirror to funky fabulous in 15 minutes. Add some dark glaze to
pop the details and it's ready to go! I used the left over paint from the {Green Bean} chair makeover in the previous post.

Next I grabbed a can of outdoor Bronze paint and gave our old sad (Orange) fading flower pots a fresh coat of paint, way cheaper than buying new pots. And of course I planted some new spring flowers!

Hello, meet Green bean... in all his green greenliness.

We met at Goodwill and after getting over my inital reaction...

I was captivated by the price tag {$7} enough to take a second glance. I told him if he wanted to become part of our family the vinyl and green had to go.

So today he got a makeover! ;)

Ah much better and a perfect chair for my art/sewing desk. This was one of the quickest and most fun before/after projects I've done... I love spray paint!

Sanded & sprayed this guy down then added some distressing and glaze, I love that bright pop of color!

I found this artsy floral upholstery fabric in the remnant section at JoAnns for $40 a yard original price tag, yikes!! Today it was 40% off and then another 50% off that, I think I paid about $12 for it... and I have more left over for other little projects!

After I finished up I got lucky to find a little beauty sitting in my chair modeling it for me. ;)

{$23} dollars start to finish. Love.

The "Suitor" Bag

A man's thrifted "Suit" jacket & tie refashioned into a messanger bag!

Remember the "Boyfriend bag" purse from earlier? Well it's time to kick up the fashion ladies... it's a suit & tie affair. ;)

This Suit has been completely "Sew-Over-It" style refashioned into a sassy, classy and totally practical messanger bag. The back has two nice size pockets, the flap and tie closure are held secure by magnetic clasps. The bag has been reinforced with stiff lining, and double stitching so this bag holds its shape great!

The inner lining is a beautiful shimmery purple with floral print, also a upcycled shirt that was no longer in style but had great fabric. This is a totally unique, fun and sassy bag!

The flap is decorated with a floral ~~pin~~ corsage made from left over fabrics.

This will soon be added to my etsy shop, look for it and others coming soon!!!

What inspires you to Create?

I get truely inspired by beautiful bold paint colors, the feel of a paintbrush in my hand, the sound of my sewing machine, thread fibers all over my studio floor, natural textures that beg to be touched, a warm cup of coffee, the smell of rain..... mmmm... Those are a few of the things that inspire me!

What inspires you?

Is it a new stash of fabric waiting to be sewn, a pile of flour & chocolate chips... cooking delightful creations, a beautiful sunset, dance shoes, a blank page and pen, or even cute baby toes?

One of the things that I love most about people is how much variety "Creativity" form comes in, there is no one way... each of us see the world in a different light and are inspired by different things.

God is the creator of creativity, life is beautiful and perfect that way... and I'm thankful for that!

Slug bug Aqua! Isn't she pretty?! I wanted to take "her" home with me... but instead I snapped a quick pic (yes I felt very stalkerish... lol...) and promised her I'd come visit again.... ;) but I just had to share her adorableness with you.

My Little Sunshine is 2!!

Two years ago this amazing, beautiful little person joined our family!

My little Sunshine, Briellah.

She got her beautiful big brown eyes from her daddy... I'm a sucker for that look!

Everyday is an adventure and I love the little lady she is growing into.

She practically lives in her dress up costumes, everyday she loves to wear her pink gown... from running, jumping to twirling!

We are so blessed! I am thankful for everyday with my little sweetheart.

Tiffany & Co. inspired - Crib bedding set

I've been MIA and hard at work sewing a gorgeous little girls crib bedding set inspired by Tiffany & Co.

No more babies for me, this was created for one of my good friends sister, who is expecting her precious little girl soon! :) Here are a few pics of the completed set.

The set included: a bumper, unique "Bella" design quilt, box pleat crib skirt, 3 throw pillows, minky travel blanket and 3 little Luvies (burp cloths)

This was our inspiration photo, she loved the Tiffany Blue color and damask pattern but wanted the black accents.

Miraculously I was able to find the exact same fabric! It is gorgeous.

Just don't spread the word to much... I like having a secret stash! ;)

I learned how to sew my own piping and cut on the bias for this project, it was full of firsts for me! I realized how much I LOVE Google, it's my bff on the internet. You can seriously learn how to DO anything in a flash... what did people do before internet and all you other awesome DIY blogs that I rely on??? ;)

I added thick black piping on the top and bottom of the bumper with extra big bows to add to the drama. I refashioned the bumper with a brand new one I found on super sale at Target for $13, it was a horrid fabric... but I needed a pattern and bumper pads, it was perfect and more thrifty than buying it seperate from Joanns! The pads alone there were $25+ dollars.

This is my second "Bella" quilt and I love the way the black piping just finishes it perfectly! See the first set HERE.

With the crib skirt I got thrifty and found a brand new white full size bedskirt that I had never even opened the package (my son isn't one to appreciate a "skirt" on his bed... haha). So I "Sew-Over-It" and refashioned it into a crib size skirt and added the black and teal trim. Great way to save $ on fabric!

And no Tiffany & Co. Inspired bedroom could be complete without the signature box! ;)

So I created a personalized version using their daughters name Tenley.

And of course you can't forget to indulge in a few "diamonds", satin and velvet!

Don't worry, these throw pillows are decorative purpose only for the chair, not crib use.

I had fun sewing this custom bedding set, and may just have to think about adding some designs to my shop in the future!

Feel Beautiful... and a new painting

We are already into Feburary of 2011 and one of my goals for this year was to get feel completely comfortable in my own skin. Enjoy the more natural beauty of my hair (I am in the process of growing it out, not easy!), work out & run more to feel healthier and overall take a more simple aproach to 2011.

Simply enjoy what inspires me and persue my passions with even more vigor.

I found this quote in a magazine a while ago, and it really stopped me... it is so true. When you feel truely comfortable inside & out your inner beauty really projects! I was inspired to paint something to reflect that quote... and it also reflects my own obsession with shoes. ;)

After painting this I had to spoil myself to a fabulous pair of new shoes! I found the most AMAZING deal on a pair of platform peep toe heels by Guess, in Nude. Haha... Perfect! ;)

Sometimes you just need to find the right key to unlock the memories....

I found these old keys hidden under the carpet in the corner of the first home we bought. I wonder what memories and treasures they unlock?

My Great Grandmothers Fancy Hat, beautiful satin bows, tulle, and luscious minks fur... pure lady with a touch of sass! Oh to live in a time where we could wear fabulous hats and dresses!

Tutorial - Fabric Manipulation #1

Easy Fabric Manipulation Tutorial

How to take a boring piece of flat fabric to one filled with texture and design!?

In just a few easy steps you can create your own project with this easy technique. Great for purses, bags, pillowcases, duvets... etc. There are so many great ways to incorporate texture!

For this tutorial I chose a thick grey denim fabric, you can use most fabrics.. my recommendation is something with a heavier weight, this will help retain the texture shape. However you can use a fusible interfacing/backing after texture is complete, just be careful not to smash down folds/texture to interfacing while ironing. I used a interfacing on the red clutch above because it was a very lightweight fabric.

To begin, cut a piece of fabric LARGER than what you need for your project by a couple inches each direction. The texture shrinks the fabric size! You can remeasure & cut the dimentions you need once you have created your texture.

Start by graphing out the BACK of your fabric, the lines depend upon how much/less texture you want your project to have. I chose 1.5 x 2 inch squares for my purse.

Next mark DOTS where you will be pinching the fabric to create texture.

I recommend alternately stacking your dots, not placing a dot directly on top of the other.... this is just a preference however. Practice with your design on scrap fabric first! :)

Pinch the dot point between your fingers...

Then fold keeping that dot point at the very outer edge. You can pin your fold in place and repeat till all your dots have been pinched, folded & pinned.

Then sew along the edge of your fold, the further back your seam the deeper texture folds you will have. I sewed mine along the yellow line, be sure to backstich each seam!!

DONE! - The back of the fabric.

Notice there are no seams showing from the front! You can carefully iron your texture to create sharper edges for a more polished look. Now you are ready to use the fabric to create your own project. :)

I created this purse for my daughter with mine.

She loves having a big girl purse, she takes it everywhere now... filled with little miscellaneous toys and lip glosses. I need to make momma one now too!! ;)

I also created this fun red clutch for my sister's Christmas gift, I'm addicted to manipulating fabric! It's like creating a sculpture from fabric and makes your project so much more interesting.

A Christmas glimpse... the calm after the storm

I hope your homes were filled with holiday cheer, much love and excitement this Christmas Season! Our Christmas weekend was a busy & special one... my whole family was together for Christmas this year. I love enjoying these special times and never want to take our time together for granite!

We enjoyed a beautiful Christmas Eve dinner at my grandmothers house and had fun playing the white elephant game later that night. I think it was the first year ever that everyone ended up with something they like... haha... just wait till next year! ;)

My daughter LOVES her gifts, an artists set and pink digital camera... I love that we share a love for art & photography! Maybe a sewing machine will come next year? ;)

I did my best to come up with handmade gifts this year! Wow, it was a lot of hard work but soooo rewarding & a fun learning experience. Of course we bought the kids toys though! ~~lol...I'm not an idiot!~~

I got some good guesses on a lil preview of something I was working on as a gift.

A textured clutch! I am in love with creating texture in fabrics, so much fun!

Another pinch textured handbag for my daughter Eliannah. I made all the girls tiny purses & matching blinged out flipflops for dressup time. So cute, bummer I forgot to take picutres of the tiny sets!

I will be posting a texture tutorial next on how to create this look for your own projects!

A chocolate linen & patterend purse, I scored big on this gorgeous fabric... 75% off $24 dollars a yard! Made a purse for both my mother & mother-in law, great for spring season around the corner.

I have also finally conqured the zipper! After many ~~curse~~ unfriendly words were exchanged and projects left to die in the trash... we have come to live happily together. I may just be leaving my faithful snaps and velcro for my new love! ;) Don't let all those teeth scare you away... he's not as unfriendly as appears. You'll be glad you learned!

I didn't get pictures of all my creations this year but was happy that I took the handmade challenge... I learned a lot and each item was well loved and received by my friends/family! :)

I just love the calm after the storm, the post Christmas craziness turns still... the kids are quiet & happily exploring their new treasures. My little man just melts my heart, he turned 7 a few days before Christmas.

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas! We survived our Christmas / birthday craziness and I'm SOOOO thankful to have my husband back from long hours at work. So sit back and relax before you start the big x-mas decor repacking project! ;)

Elfing Christmas

Tis the Season to be busy!

lol... gotta love the title, I've been hard at work getting my elf on. ;) I love Christmas but am ready to get life back to somewhat normal...

or at least get my hubby back from playing "Brown Santa" ;)

Check out a few of the projects and paintings I've been working on... more to come soon, surprise's for x-mas! ;) I'll tell you one thing, I LOVED being able to do "christmas shopping" from my own shop for little things & gifts for teachers. The kids had fun picking something for their teachers, best part didn't have to spend a dime!

Website Updates! :)

I finally got around to updating my website and changing the name to Heather Hurzeler!

It's a great way for me to keep all my "Creations" together, eventually I'll move to a single Blog that includes everything at HeatherHurzeler.Com.... but not yet.

Its getting way to confusing for me to keep 3 different branches going at once, on different sites: : my artwork at Hurzeler Creations, Baby Products at LuvARoo, and sewing projects at Sew-Over-It.

A few NEW pillows in the Shop

and fun with my new Nikon camera!

I added zippers to make these easy to wash, and to change pillowcase after seasons change.

My love bought me my first SLR digital camera, a Nikon D3100! I've been having fun learning, and being SUPER inpressed with the quality difference from my lame ol point and shoot, to my new Artists tool! ;) All the new pillow pics were taken with my new camera, great right!?

Even my kids are saying no more pics mommy... I've been playing paparazzi! haha.. ;)

Gotta practice on the friends kidos too! How adorable is this lil man!?

Studio Mini Makeover

Mini Makeover and Fabulous Garage Sale Finds!! :)

Between last week and this weekend I've been lucky enough to stumble upon some amazing finds at even better prices to help give my studio a little update! :) I wasn't a huge fan of the black wire racks in this room but they did their job, I'm in favor of most things being hidden away from the curious fingers of my toddler!

Don't worry I am still have all my wine crates for storage, they are being well loved and used. ;) I came across a garage sale from the sweetest older woman who quilts for a hobby. She was selling this hutch that she owned for several years but it never made its way out of her garage.

Pretty right? Well, I just about fell over when she opened it to show me what it was!!

A SEWING cabinet with an ELECTRIC lift!! I was in LOVE!

Its Solid oak and very heavy, has plenty of organization and hidden storage.... all for $35! A steal I know, she was the most sweet lady, we talked about sewing... brought me in her home and showed me her beautiful handmade quilts. Even offered to teach me how to quilt sometime. :)

Its seriously pretty amazing, I didn't know that things like this even existed! I cleaned it up, and spray painted the handles a dark metallic bronze, they were a brassy gold before... much better now. She told me the electric lift didn't work, but to my surpise I plugged it in at home and UP came my sewing machine from the bottom storage rack.

Yes, I admit I have ~~childishly~~ joyfully played with the lever.... up... down.... up... down... happy dance!! lol...

I researched it online and found nothing else like it except for one, a long lost twin seperated at birth perhaps. ;) A super sweet crafty fellow blogger from Quixotic Crafter, she shared some info about with me her sewing cabinet hutch as well.

Well next I met a neighbor of mine that was having a garage sale, but decided it was to cold... so they would just give the items left away for free! Arizona doesn't really get that cold, but it has been chilly this week. But heck, my gain! He was dragging this cool looking stainless steel workbench table to the curb as I pulled up.

He told me he & his father were shoe cobblers years ago... and this was the last piece left from their shop. It needed some love, but with the stainless steel top, leather straps and height it made for the perfect art worktable for my studio! I'm not a fan of an easel, I'd usually rather lean my canvas against the wall from the table top to paint (see the fabric covered cork board to protect my wall from paint). And spread my paints & brushes all over the table. I cleaned this cobblers table up and painted it a pretty aqua for my studio... I left the leather straps, they are perfect for large brushes!

It was a great week, I have much to be thankful for... including how God always provides even down to the smallest details! :)

Now, time to get painting & sewing... I will be adding some new items to the Etsy shop soon!

So I found another firepit at WallyWorld (full price, but it was well worth the sleep), and bought cozy slippers for the kids! None of it was on sale... lol.. I think I'm the worlds worst black friday deal finder. Regardless, we are looking forward to family cozy firepit time tonight! :) Now I gotta go get some marshmellows..... Pumpkin Placecards and Frame Decor

Happy Holidays!!

We are getting in a festive mood over here, and are excited to host Thanksgiving at our house tomorrow! Lots of last minute decorating and cleaning, and of course listening to Christmas music! ;)

This year I wanted to add a little more pop to the tables setting and painted some mini pumpkins in place of name place cards. Each little pumpkin has a name on top and is painted in tones of Gold/Silver and Bronze paired with orange. So fun & festive!!

Each pumkin will be placed on a plate with alternating gold & silver chargers. I left a blank spot on the front of each pumpkin and picked up some black sharpies... so each family member can fill in a word of something they are thankful for! A fun take home reminder to be thankful for the little things, family and fun times together. :)

Decorating is simple yet classy this year... I filled up my apothecary jars with things like whole walnuts, tiny pinecones and candy!

I have already have a few Christmas decorations up... I found several big empty frames at yard sales a while back and found the perfect use for them this holiday season.

Old Empty frames make a charming way to display wreaths, ornaments, christmas cards... etc.

A HUGE empty frame on my wall (waiting patiently for me to paint a picture to go inside) was the perfect place to hang a large wintery wreath.

Sadly we don't have a fireplace so a bookshelf above our entertainment center is my "faux mantle".. lol.. I think I seriously may have gone overboard with frames, but I couldn't get enough of the simplicity & charm they provide.

I hung these sparkly pinecones and icicles from this one, added my sweater candles and a little sparkly Christmas tree. Reminds me of looking out an old barn window to see the snow falling. Lots of memories of snowy Christmas time with my family in Michigan growing up!

Meet our adorable little Charlie Brown tree.... lol.. This cutie is for the kids. We thought a live tree would be fun this year, and something fun to plant after the season is over. I found the greatest little wooden top ornaments and bells for this tiny tree. The kids love it because it's a perfect height for them... and every time they shake it a bell rings... and an angel gets its wings. ;)

Well, Happy Holidays from my family to yours.... and a big sloppy wet nose kiss too! LOL....

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and don't get trampled in black friday sales.... I think I already decided I'm gonna spend my morning snuggled up in bed. No crazy shopping for me this year, just relaxing... well maybe a little online shopping! Gotta support my UPS man! ;)

Craft Show Fun with Pics!

Craft Show Boutique Pics!! :)

We had a great time, thank you so much to all our friends & family that stopped by to share in the fun.

Together Laura & I had a super colorful table with a variety of goodies for sale. We were one of the few booths there with all handmade goods and had a completly unique look from the rest of the booths.

(Sorry for the foggy pics, I didn't realize that my toddler had planted a nice sticky fingerprint on my camera lens! lol)

Together we made loads of Hair accessories which almost completly sold out the first day!

It was exausting but super fun! Note to self: never attempt to wear high heels of any kind for that many hours a day... we had no place for chairs and spent both days on our feet. Thank goodness for a celebratory glass of wine & bubble bath!

Love Notes and a Special Date

Love Notes...

I married the love of my life almost 10 years ago!

I love this man, life is so much fun and better together. Can't believe we have been married for nearly 8 years, it's amazing how quickly its passed. Yet when I look back, through all we have been through; 3 children, homes, places we've visited... pets we've owned... lol.. It feels like we have always been together.

So with our special date quickly approaching I've been feeling nostalgic and romantic. I went though a box of some of the love letters we wrote to eachother over the years, and felt inspired to create something fun and meaningful for our anniversary.

I had seen tutorial from AlisaBurke blog, about making love notes into pillows! Loved this idea... so here is my version of the Love Note throw pillows. What a beautiful reminder everyday of our love!

All my love, All the time... is a phrase we started when dating and had fallen head over heals in love. :) He had this saying engraved onto a silver jewelry box for me as a christmas gift before we were engaged. I treasure it and still love our little quote.

How to make your own love note pillows?

Scan in your lovenotes, song, or whatever is meaningful to you. I edited them in photoshop, enlarged and increased the contrast of the letters, you can also give it a sepia effect. Then simply print onto an iron on transfer paper! Be SURE to Mirror your image before you print!!! I've forgotten this many times...

Then follow your transfer papers ironing directions. I used a natural colored linen for my love notes and a pretty linen floral for the rest of the pillow. The colors and flowers reminded me of our wedding day!

Sew your love note to the front material of your pillow, I like the exposed edges.. they will fray slightly over time. However you could fold your edges in for a crisp look. Then sew your pillow together right sides facing eachother, leave a 4 inch opening on the bottom to turn right side out, stuff your pretty new pillows and handstich the opening closed. I love pillows, my hubby laughs at our throw pillow collection for the bed... but maybe he will enjoy these sweet reminders of All my love, All the time... ;)

I'm looking forward to this weekend... a four day weekend for us! Time to just to enjoy being together and celebrate 8 years and many more to come!

Sorry I've been MIA for the last few days... Halloween was a blast! We had a great time hanging out with friends and family. So much candy & fun costumes!

Boyfriend Bag and Nature Lovers Purse

This purse/bag started off as a navy blue cozy mens knit sweater and chunky leather belt.

Something about turning menswear into womens accessories I love... the rough edginess to something so soft and pretty!

The strap and buckle were made from refashioning a well broken in mens leather belt.

I love the weight and feel to it, the buckle is fully fuctioning and helps hold your belongings safe inside along with a magnetic clasp!

On a side note, I was so excited to find this vintage amazing apple crate at a yard sale a few weeks ago.

It has been added to my collection in my craft room! :)

DIY Twinkle Toes

Twinkle Toes - Upcycle Style!

I went shoe shopping this weekend with my 5 year old daughter, she most definetely inherited my love for shoes! You should have seen her face when she saw a pair of Twinkle Toes shoes on the rack.... pretty much my same reaction to a pair of amazing leather strappy heels on sale!

Stars in her eyes... nothing else matters but these shoes, need to have, must have... will most possibly die without them. ;)

I've seen these shoes on TV before but hadn't really thought much about them. They are super girly sparkly over the top, but little girls LOVE them. I was informed by my daughter, that "EVERYONE at school has a pair of twinkle toes", and "I am the only one without them".... "I love them mommy.... please please please!"

I almost folded until I checked out the price tag, $42!!! Wait a minute, are you freaking kidding me?? $42 for kids shoes that will be grown out of in approx 3 months from now?

So began our journey of DIY Twinkle Toes Shoes, here is my simple tutorial. Sorry the pics aren't the greatest, I had a slave driver watching over my shoulder.... lol... She was MORE than excited to try them on! :)

Lucky for me I had just picked up these canvas pink/black shoes at a garage sale last weekend for $1, but you could find something similar in at a thrift shop, sale bin, walmart... etc..

Next we got online and I let her pick out her favorite pair of Twinkle Toes on Sketches website.

I gathered my supplies: Fabric Paint, Puffy black paint for details, glitter, fabric safe glue, and jewels for loads of sparkle!

Thankfully I already had ALL these items in my craft room, so this project only cost me $1! -- Thats a savings of $41 bucks! --- Do you think that savings justifies me being able to buy myself a pair of new shoes??? ;)

Tip: Be sure to stuff your shoe with something to keep it firm... I learned this half way through the project. Painting is much easier on a firm canvas rather than floppy one. I painted one shoe first to give myself a template for the 2nd one.

In progress! I painted the laces area blue, let dry, then added fabric glue and lots of glitter!

** Now for the sparkly fun! - Bedazzling! **

I used glue backed jewels and the sauter iron, but had hard time getting them to stay put on the rubber.

I ended up regluing a few them using superglue which worked much better!

Smiles of my Week

Well I didn't accomplish much sewing this week, with the kids home from fall break... and sick germies sharing their love between the 3 kids, and myself... But, I did have plenty to be thankful for!

Here are a few moments that made me Smile!

Nap time didn't come easy when Bella's big brother & sis were home this week. She played till she dropped! It finally got quiet in the house, and I found my baby girl curled up on the dog bed with her big sisters favorite stuffed doggie! So precious....

The next was totally RANDOM. If you know my son, you know is 100% a pizza, pasta, burger loving kinda guy. So my jaw dropped when he requested spinach SALAD for dinner.... haha.. probably a once in a lifetime request... but hey, I was happy to serve up his order! I can't even get his daddy to eat this stuff.... go Buddy!

Next my husbands parents from Oregon spent the weekend with us and we all LOVED having them here.

It makes me smile how much my hubby loves his family!

Here is a pic of my adorable mother-in law and handsome hubby. :)

Next smile is my magical wardrobe.... I'm not gonna lie, I definetely did a happy dance when I brought this beauty home. It has been in my family for over 100+ years, an antique passed down through several generations I believe.

It has so many childhood memories associated with it, I was so fascinated by it growing up. Now my children get share in the memories! My parents were cleaning out a spare room where it has been stored for years, and lovingly passed it on to me because they knew the joy it would bring me! It has no fur coats or alternate worlds that I'm aware of... but you never know..... ;)

It is HUGE tall, and I love the details and charcacter of it! I think it always reminded me of the wardrobe from Beauty & the Beast that sings in Bell's Room. So for now it will store all the creations that I make to sell in my etsy LuvARoo shop. :)

And lastly, there is a thunderstorm rolling in right now! If you know me, you'll know rain & thunder makes me SMILE! I'm off to make dinner & watch the storm with my lil family!

Ripping out the pages

Book Pages Upcycling?

Don't worry I'm not ripping up any amazing documentaries... I used dollar store bargain books for my projects! No classics I'm sure.... ;)

I got this idea from JoyFrameworks, who shared her Pages Wreath. Well, I fell in love with this idea and had to create my own too. Here is my spin on it and also some other clever book page decorating ideas I found in Blogland.

Book Page Wreaths

Aren't they pretty? I love that all the texture yet they give the wall!

They are super easy to make, I bought all the supplies at the dollar store:

* A plain wreath any size or kind you like (you wont see it anyway as it is going to be covered in pages!)

* Books- I bought two, one a cheesy romance novel. (and the other was called Pot Shot. LOL... Who would know these pretty wreaths are actually made from books about pot & sex!! hahaha... Shhh... Our secret!) ;)

--- NOTE: I would LOVE to see this created out of sheet MUSIC pages!

I don't have any tutorial pics for you but It's pretty easy you get the idea. First you paint or stain the edges of your book, let dry then..... Just Rip, Roll, and Glue!

I used hot glue and have plenty of blisters today to prove it. However I did find another tutorial with a clever idea of using a hanger...No gluing, very clever! See it here at Corner Crafts.

I really like the idea of keeping these wreaths plain and adding to them for the holiday seasons.

So I created this smaller Autumn leaves wreath that fits perfectly in the center of the large paper wreath.

These large colorful leaves were from the dollar store also!

I glued these around an old embroidery hoop, very simple & lightweight!

Best part is I already had the hoop, and the leaves only cost me a $1.

Place it in the center of the large wreath... and now I've added a little Autumn Colors!

I can't decide if I love it there though, I might use my Fall leaves wreath somewhere else. What do you think? Is it to bold a contrast in the center?

She handpainted autumn leaves with watercolors onto her pages.. this is so pretty & colorful!

If you enjoy painting this is a great project, it might also be a fun variation for kids!

Have them paint fall leaves onto pages to create something for their door.

She also used an old embroirdery hoop! :)

I made some leaves like this with my extra pages and stuck them on the fridge. They might make an awesome garland though.

Hexagon Table Makeover!

$5 - Drab to Fab - Remember how I found this guy at a yard sale last weekend?

BEFORE:

Boring right? Well, I had fun plans for this funky table!

I love the detail on the front of this cabinet table, but it looks overall dated... I love the hidden storage too!

We needed a coffee table, and wanted something that would fit right in our living room that is arranged at an angle, hence one of the reasons I chose this table with all the angles!

I also wanted a fun pop of soft color, so here is the AFTER! :)

I love the way it adds a splash of color without being to overwhelming. I'm pretty happy with the outcome!

I had so much fun working with the glaze on this project, giving it that aged beauty.

First I sanded it down and removed the hardware

It's a messy dirty job but somebodies gotta do it! ;)

I chose this soft teal blue color from the designs in our rug, they look so pretty together!

I used a dark esspresso colored glaze, that stuff is so much fun to work with! It makes everything look more glamourous... how boring would this piece be if it was just a solid color?

Next we spray painted the knob with a metalic oil rubbed bronze to give it new life! I may be a little obsessed with this stuff... we also painted the gold old handles on our entertainment center this color too.

That stuff saved me a bunch of $$, rather than buying new knobs just because I hated the color... we simply changed them. And it is super durable too!

Family approved! ;)

Trash to treasure...this was a fun project! I'm sure you'll be seeing more soon....

Yard Sale Success!

I did a little treasure hunting this weekend looking for a couple things for the new house... well I was more than successful! I snagged some awesome deals and am in love with my new found treasures. :)

First off I found this gorgeous vintage liquor cabinet, I bought this for only $40!

It's valued at WAY more than that, I found this beauty from a sweet old lady who had received it as a wedding gift over 50 years ago. I felt kinda guilty buying it from her! lol...

I won't be doing any changes on this baby, love the details... its in perfect condition.

I also made some of those awesome sweater vase candle holders I've been admiring from left over scraps from my sweater pillow/purse project. I love the way the candle light flickers through the knit, I've lit them almost every evening to relax after the kids are in bed and enjoyed with a glass of wine!

(I know.... my poor sad empty picture frame... a painting is next on my to do list.)

Well, next stop on my garage sale adventure... I found this bad mamma jamma octagon table... $5!

I remember my parents had something like it when I was little, I remember hiding inside the cabinet on many of our hide-n-seek adventures! Bring on the memories... I have an awesome makeover planned for this guy!

Yes, I'm quite aware that it is officially ugly in its current state... lol... my hubby gave me the "are you serious look?" when brought it home. ;) --- Check back soon, I'll prove him wrong!

This lovely lady bust was only $2, she is gorgeous and a quirky art piece perfect for my house!

Something for the hubs!

My husband collects and greatly enjoys pipes, I found this very detailed Meerschaum pipe for sale from the same lady I bought the liquor cabinet. It was a steal as well, and has a ton of fun character!

Last I'm so happy about this last find... I found beautiful high quality drapery + gorgeous curtain rods for sale... for only $20 for all of it! Enough to cover ALL the windows in our master bedroom... in our colors, brown and blues! Sweet & perfect! I couldn't even buy 2 yards of this fabric for that price!

Well, I'm off to set up all of the beautiful treasures I found this weekend and get decorating... who says you can't have a beautiful home on a dime? Get thrifty and keep an eye out for a good deal!

Sweater Upcycle - Thrifty Fall Decor

Decorate your home for Fall... Big Cozy style... on a tiny budget!!

Upcycling, Thrifty and Dollar Bins!

First lets start with a big fun center piece I created spending less than $11.

* $3 - The twig nest basket was a thrifty find from Goodwill, I am so in love with the natural raw feel to it but had no idea how I would use it at the time

* $2.50 - The twig pumpkin was a dollar bin at Target $2.50!

* $2 - Small pumpkin from the grocery store

* $3 - Pumpkin scented candle is in glass vase to keep my pretty basket from burning up! Smells & looks so pretty!

Keep an eye out for big glass vases at garage sales, I picked this beauty up for .50 cents.. cleaned it up a little and it's perfect! These can cost $10+ dollars alone in most stores! Be sure to use other items you already have in your home creatively. I used these 2 ikea mirror frames as a base for my arrangement. Set the candles on the mirrors, sprinkle a little $4 autumn potpourri from Walmart, Candles and 3 costume jewelry golden leaf pins = Lovely!

This upcycle project was by FAR the most FUN I had sewing in a while... What do you think I could create from this? An ivory dated Large knit sweater that found half off from Goodwill... $2.50! It's so cozy and warm! In Arizona its still 100+ degrees, too hot to wear a sweater yet... So I had to get creative on how to use it now! :)

Not bad right!? :) Believe it or not these all came from this upcycled sweater refashion, two cozy rectangle sweater pillows, and one awesome sweater handbag!

Can you believe I made all of this from a $2 sweater? The only other thing i had to buy was the stuffing for the pillows... about $3 extra total! The rest of the items I needed I already had on hand. I used a skinny leather belt to make the handles on the purse, and some white jersey knit to create a lining on the pillow. I even have enough left over material from the sleeve cuffs that I can make some of those adorable sweater covered vases I've been reading about from fellow bloggers lately!

I love these chunky cozy sweater pillows! My girlfriends & I walked through Pottery Barn a couple weeks ago for fun... and all loved the sweater pillows they had on display, but the price tag was nearly $35!

Gulp.... I'll take my $2 version anyday! ;)

Last but not least, is my favorite... the autumn/winter inspired handbag!

It was an adventure sewing through this many layers of thick sweater... my poor sewing machine broke two needles during assembly! But I think it was well worth it!

My Studio

~ WELCOME! ~

I'm excited to share my Art / Craft Studio with you... this is my favorite spot in the house. I feel inspired, happy and cozy in here.

I love the eclectic style, combining vintage with modern, vibrant colors & textures. We've only been in the new house for a week, and this is where I've spent most of my time decorating so far. I LOVE having a crafting space, after years of working on the dining room table, counters with unpacking and repacking supplies into the garage... I'm so happy that my sweet hubby allowed me to use this formal dining room as my art studio!

I even have my own assistant! Meet Turbo, my spunky cockatoo. :)

We have long talks about my newest creations when the rest of my family is sick of hearing about it. lol... He keeps me company and provides a constant mess of seeds for me to sweep up. But I love him and his quirkiness.

I found these words at Ross for $8 and knew they had to be a part of my studio. The curtains I found at the World Market place, an avocado green paired with bright blues/teal and pink! Some of my favorite food & colors! ;)

Vintage Crates

Instead of buying baskets for my shelves I've been collecting vintage & wine crates to store my fabric and novelties in. I came upon this Antique Ginger Ale crate at a garage sale... it was a steal! I also bought new wine crates from Total wine for $5, I stained and aged them. They give me lots of unique storage that is very easy on the pocket book, and fun to look at! Be creative when you design your spaces, think outside the box... or in my case.. in the box. ;)

It's still a work in progress... I would love to find a big comfy chair for my office. What do you think about something like one of these?

Funky Friday

Two VERY important lessons I learned this week..... ;)

1: NEVER put your apples in the same bowl as garlic cloves, LOL... the apples will absorb the garlic flavor and your children will ~~think your evil~~ gag when you unknowingly feed them garlic flavored apples for lunch!

2. NEVER feed your toddler chocolate in public no matter how much they scream or beg you... because you will most certainly somehow end up with your pants covered in chocoate and not realize it (while walking around the store for over an hour) looking like you've had a poop explosion. That explains the strange glances from strangers.... LOL.... Omg!

Ahh... Oh why doesn't motherhood come with a manual? ;)

Anyways, besides my funky friday I do have a couple things I'm SO excited about!

I'm working on getting some decoration / storage things together for my new craft room. :) I purchased the most beautiful vintage ceiling tin memo board for my room from my friend over at JoyFrameworks.

Next I stopped by Total Wine and purchased a couple wine crates for $4.99 each!! I'm going to "age" them with some stain and they will work perfectly to store all my fabric & goodies in the craft/sewing room. You can't even buy baskets for that cheap. I'm excited to get decorating! :)

Well... Wish me luck. Our big move is tomorrow... (and yes, I am procastinating all the last minute things to do right now... lol..), thankfully my amazing mother is watching the kidos overnight. So tomorrow should be pretty simple without kids underfoot.

Autumn Inspirations

I love Fall Colors, Autumn is my favorite season!

I've started on another fall season project.. the photo above is a sneak preview.

A brown linen purse, with fall leaves... I will be making two. One is sold already, but the other will be available to purchase once it's completed!

We are moving into a new home next week, I'm SO excited because I will have my own art studio space. This is a huge blessing for me because it will allow me to work on projects with ease. No more taking over the dining table, counter... etc. ;) My family has been beyond patient with my arts/crafts mess. haha.. I'm looking forward to decorating the new place, just in time for fall decor!! :)

I'm ready to go buy some pumpkins for the kids again this year...

And take a trip up north to see hike among the Autumn leaves....

Art to Go... Hand painted handbags

A union of two of my favorite things, Painting & Sewing!!

I've been having SO much fun creating these, I love creating purses... and even MORE fun painting my own designs that decorate them. This is my newest adventure, hand painting designs for handbags.

This pretty Golden Yellow & Blue Stripe clutch was created from upcycled materials, using two shirts and my original painting. It is available to purchase in my etsy site!

~ Linen Autumn Owl Purse ~

This bag was inspired by my love of the autumn season quickly approaching and of quirky owls. The design on this was completely hand painted, the writing is Autumn poetry written on linen.

This last purse was my ~~guinea pig~~ first creation of the bunch... I really love the way the art & beadwork turned out on this. But the clutch itself is a bit wonkie! I messed this poor lil guy up alot, but it'll be mine to love, with its backwards pocket and all. ;) It was also created from upcycled materials using two shirts donated to me, I love how it has a tropical graffiti look to it!

My Tutu & Bling Creation!

I made her this tutu outfit as part of her gift, so much fluffy fun... with a lil pink cheetah elastic band at the top. Even better this was made from all extra material I already had on stock. The tulle was reused from my sisters (lil H's mommy) wedding decorations, and the funky band was a scrap piece leftover from a blanket project!

Beachy Halter Top Refashion

First let me start out by saying how much fun we had this summer while visiting the beach in San Diego. Spending time with my family, loyal furry friend, feet in the sand and lots of sunshine!

I love the beach, and can't believe summer is coming to an end... and school starts next week! 2 of my 3 babies are going to be in school this year... sniff.... Kindergarten & 1st grade. Where does time go? Thankfully I still have my youngest munchkin at home with me... and it will be a while before school starts for her.

Anyway.... so since our time at the beach & enjoying my brother's Sailboat I've been in a nautical mood... simple, natural & fresh. Hence, the beachy halter top refashion!

This project started out with a plain white halter top with a built in shelf bra. The halter had a couple tiny stains on the front that I couldn't bleach out. So I decided to Sew Over It! :)

A super easy project with layered ruffles made from some really cool natural hemp / linen looking fabric I found at Goodwill. I added some silver nautical buttons to finish off the look.

I also made some fun hair accesories from the hemp fabric, I love all the texture to this stuff!

More on these later... but here's a little preview. Natural leaves, rosebuds, and fresh water pearls... on a bobby pin.

The Brides Flip Flops

Here is a fun idea for the bride looking for some comfortable beautiful wedding day shoes... that will keep her toes happy throughout all the dancing, walking and standing on her special day.

Beautiful details include: "swarovski" crystals beading, fresh water pearls, sweet silver lovebirds. These are ivory flats with ivory satin wrapped straps and rosebuds. I spluged on the beading, they are so sparkly and beautiful... photos just can't capture all the sparkle!

Customize Flip Flops - Tutorial

How to turn a plain pair of $3.00 flips flops into something more spectacular!

~ Tutorial ~

1. Buy some plain flip flops (Old Navy has great $3.00 pairs in every color possible!) Gather your supplies: Hot glue gun, matching ribbon, beads, needle, thread, and any other decorations for your shoes!

2. Cut ONE long piece of ribbon (long enough to twist around straps on each side, size varies depending upon shoe size). Center the ribbon on the toe thong, starting from the outside pulling ribbons to the inside.

3. Use your glue gun to secure the ribbon, glue only on the top of the strap... tightly twist & glue your ribbon all the way down each side of the strap.

4. End the ribbon at the back of the flip flop strap, neatly tuck and glue the end of the ribbon on the outside part of the strap. (to keep it from rubbing against your foot)

5. Do the same with the otherside, and you have completed the ribbon wrapped flip flops! Now the fun part decorating!!! :)

6. Decorate your flip flops with beads, pearls, bows, buttons, etc.... You can use the hot glue gun to secure the larger items. I suggest sewing beads and smaller items securely onto the ribbon itself.
** One other tip, don't go to crazy with huge bows and fluff... unless you want to look like your wearing mops on your feet! ;) Less is more I say... Simple & classy.

ALL DONE!... Simple right!?... You now have a fun inexpensive one of a kind pair of comfortable shoes! Perfect for yourself, little girl, weddings, etc....

My Cousin April is getting married soon!! :)

This photo is from my wedding day with my gorgeous cousin April nearly 8 years ago! Her own wedding day is this weekend, July 31st 2010

I'm so excited to be attending her wedding and see all my family again, I'm bringing Briellah with me since she still flys free on my lap. I wish my whole family could come.... why must AZ be so far away from KY?

I've been working on a painting for their wedding day, an artistic mat to frame their wedding vows. I was so honored and loved working on this project.

It is a very simple design of two trees of different types, the strength & beauty of the Oak & Birch trees..... entwined embracing eachother to create one canopy... symbolic of the husband & wife. The colors are soft browns, greens and a touch of shimmery bronze in the lovebirds & flourish designs. The ivy leaves twist together to symbolize their love with a heart.

I also painted a Ketubah for her sister's wedding over a year ago... see photos of this at my LuvARoo blog.

Lovebirds Nest - Ring Bearer Pillow

Ring Bearer Pillow

Sweet Love, Vows and Wedding Rings....

I created this "Lovebird nest" ring pillow for an upcoming wedding, my son is the ring bearer and daughter the flowergirl. They are going to be adorable, I can't wait... August 14th 2010, Casey & Emily's Wedding!

I also picked up the pretty Guava color sash/bow for the flower girls dress!

The pillow is made from the same ivory satin fabric as the flowergirls dress, leftovers.... so it didn't cost me a thing! :) I replicated the gathered texture of the dress on the pillow and long ivory ribbons hold the rings securely into place. They look so cute together, I can't wait to post pics of my kidos all dressed up!

It turned out so pretty, it was very simple... you could easily make this with some crafty magic for your own wedding! I found the nest, feathers, moss & eggs all at Michaels craft store. I painted the wooden eggs a pearly white color, and hot glued the nest decor together. You could make your own pillow like I did or dress up a store bought one as well!

~ Flower Girl Wedding Gown ~

Here is a preview of my latest project for my little girl Eliannah who is going to be in our long time friends upcoming beautiful wedding!

Ivory Satin Ruching Flower Girl Gown, designed by me!

Lots of tulle under this mid length skirt to make it pretty & puffy.. I'm so excited to get her in this dress for some pictures! I also made a matching ivory floral headband to go with this dress. The waist will have a large ribbon sash in the color Guava from her wedding, I still need to pick this up.

I'm really loving how the bodice turned out, the photo doesn't quite do it justice or capture all the beadwork.

I hand gathered & embelished this halter top, it was a fun project. Kind of made me want to go try my wedding dress on again... ahhh nothing more magical than a wedding!

Micah will be a ring bearer too, can't wait to get his outfit!

Crib bedding Set - "Bella = Beautiful"

One of most recent sewing projects has been this original handmade crib quilt & pillow set. Named after my daughter Briellah (Bella), it is available for sale on my LuvARoo etsy site shop: Shop Here

It is made from the highest quality soft jersey knit (grey) and beautiful (spring green & white) damask pattern.Fit for a new little prince or princess' nursery! I was inspired to create this after my last trip to Anthropologie, I walked into the bedding department and fell head over heels in love with this:

The Rosette bedding, I love the fabric texture of this! I would love to make something like this for my bed, but figured I should start small. So I created the crib blanket that includes a matching pillow!

The blanket/comforter size is 40"x50" and decorative pillow measures 10"x10" inches. The blanket has a plush lining for warmth for your babies bedding. Unusual swirls/gathers of fabric manipulation on the center of each square, create a fun "anthropologie" one of a kind look to the set.

Ruffled Vest Refashion

This was a fun easy project that was an idea from a good friend of mine. I started with her simple quarter sleeve light sweater, cut the sleeves off, cut down the middle to create a vest... sew over it... and you have created a light ruffled top adorable for summer!

In Process... easy project for a total of 1 hour tops! I love taking something old and making it new, fun and styling!

Somethings in life just make me happy & laugh out loud...

I thought I'd share a few of those moments to hopefully get a little chuckle out of you too!

Like the other day when my daughter comes downstairs, claiming she's "Recycled Mommy! I created an outfit!"..... Wearing a only target shopping bag that she cut holes in for the legs.... and used the straps for sleeves... hahah... girl after my own heart, now we must work on modesty. ;)

I've spent hours sewing her dresses, little did I know I could have made her equally happy handing her a shopping bag onzie! LOL...

I read a couple quotes from one of my favorite blogs ikat bag reminding me when I'm frustrated to find the humor it could always be worse! ; ) Lol...

•"Be grateful that you weren't forced at gunpoint to sew clothes out of polyester printed with hibiscus and lobsters"
